Senate Voted to Defeat the DARK Act

hi-res_label-dark-text (1)

We won!

Today’s vote was a HUGE victory for every American who wants to know what’s in their food. The Senate voted to defeat the DARK Act this morning and it wouldn’t have happened without you.

We’re optimistic that the Senate will take this opportunity to craft a national GMO labeling solution that focuses on improving transparency and reducing consumer confusion. After thousands of calls from GMO labeling supporters like you, senators can no longer deny that nine out of 10 Americans want clear GMO labels on the package.

We’ll keep you posted on what comes next, but we had to take this moment to thank you for all your support. Stopping the DARK act at this point is a huge win and we know it wouldn’t have happened without all your calls, emails and support.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Gary Hirshberg
Chairman, Just Label It

RED ALERT: Right now a handful of Senators are trying to pass an outrageous corporate bailout for Big Food and the biotech industry known as the Monsanto Promotion Act in the Senate and we need your help to STOP IT TODAY- Every voice counts!

FDN_MonsantoGMOTShillsSenateLONGER_1

Right now Monsanto and the Grocery Manufacturers Association are scrambling in Washington DC to get your Senators to trample on states’ rights and hand Monsanto and Big Food another massive corporate bailout by making it illegal for states to pass common sense GMO labeling laws like the Connecticut, Vermont and Maine legislatures did in 2013 and 2014. This bailout not only protects Monsanto’s toxic products from real scientific investigations by the federal government, but also forces the USDA to promote GMOs around the country to try to create widespread “Consumer Acceptance” (this is the actual phrase from Senator Roberts bill).

That’s right, your Senators could vote next week to not only sell your constitutional rights to protect Monsanto and Big Food from common sense GMO labeling, but they’re also going to use taxpayer money to PROMOTE Monsanto, DuPont, Dow Chemical and Syngenta’s GMOs across the United States. This is an outrage, and calls to your Senators are the only thing standing in the way from this passing in the Senate and becoming the law of the land.

It’s absolutely CRITICAL that all of us make calls NOW to your Senators urging them to VOTE AGAINST S. 2609 and DEFEND VERMONT’s HISTORIC GMO LABELING LAW, which will go into effect on July 1st of this year.

We need to make sure they hear – Loud and Clear – that we won’t allow them to steal our basic democratic rights to protect Monsanto’s toxic profits.

Here’s what your Senators need to hear from us:

They MUST OPPOSE S. 2609 and any proposal that would preempt States’ Rights and Maine’s landmark GMO Labeling bill.  They should support the excellent alternative bill sponsored by Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR). The Merkley bill would institute strong mandatory GMO Labeling nationwide.

Click here to make a call today! This corrupt deal – the ultimate Monsanto Promotion Act – will be voted on Next Week in the Senate and your Senators need to hear from you today!

Republicans Pitch the Monsanto Promotion Act!  Now Senate Republicans are desperate to promote Monsanto’s products To FORCE “Consumer Acceptance” on the American Public.
The current legislation from Senator Pat Roberts is so corrupt and contains such a massive corporate bailout for Monsanto, that even Roberts’ fellow Senators are outraged and are now calling his bill the “Monsanto Promotion Act”.

Buried in S. 2609, the bill Sen. Pat Roberts is trying to push through the Senate, is an outrageous proposal that demands using federal government funds to promote GMOs through educational, outreach and promotional efforts to “address consumer acceptance”. They have gone too far and we need your help today to stop dead in its tracks!

‘SEC. 294. INFORMATION FOR CONSUMERS.

‘‘(a) EDUCATION.—The Secretary, in coordination with other Federal agencies as appropriate, shall provide science-based information, including any information on the environmental, nutritional, economic, and humanitarian benefits of agricultural biotechnology, through education, outreach, and promotion to address consumer acceptance of agricultural biotechnology.

We’ve been able to stop them so far because of a massively high volume of phone calls, but we need to keep the phones ringing.

The vote is could take place as early as next week in the Senate and your Senators need to hear from you today!

This our moment to STOP Monsanto – It’s all hands on deck! We are in the final hours to protect our right to know what’s in our food and states’ rights so we can achieve mandatory GMO labeling. Please share with your friends and call your Senators today! Every voice counts!

Remember, democracy is like a muscle, either you use it or you lose it!

Thanks for participating in food democracy.

Tell your Senators to support mandatory GMO labeling and to stand up for your rights and the Constitution.

Then SHARE this image far and wide to Stop Monsanto’s GMO Trolls in the Senate!

Today is the last chance to “try” to make a difference!

FDN_SenateBetraysAmericaAction230_1

According to the Food Democracy Action team, “Earlier this morning the U.S. Senate voted 60 to 37 to pass cloture on Fast Track authority on the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP). Today’s vote was a procedural vote on cloture, which limits debate on this secret international trade agreement, the language of which, the American public has not been allowed to read.

This vote, and the secrecy surrounding the Fast Track agreement, is an absolute betrayal of the American people that undermines representative democracy and the important consumer protection laws that local, state and federal elected officials have passed to protect our health, environment and economy.

These 13 Democratic Senators Just Betrayed the American Dream – Make sure they Hear from YOU Today!

Let them know that there will be consequences for today’s vote! And find out how your Senator vote below.

GMO Labeling Laws Around the World: The 64 Countries That Do It

The U.S. currently enforces no mandatory labeling laws on genetically modified foods. Yet we still position ourselves as the world’s most powerful nation. What kind of powerful nation refuses to empower its citizens with the rights to make informed decisions about the food they eat?

These 64 countries, some considerably less “powerful” than the U.S., have mandatory labeling laws on foods containing genetically modified ingredients. You can view a very informative map of the world and the countries with and without GMO labeling laws on the Center for Food Safety’s website. The U.S., along with most of Africa and the Middle East, lags behind the rest of the world, even despite rising consumer concern and pressure on the FDA.

These countries require mandatory labeling of nearly all GMO foods and a labeling threshold of 0.9–1% GMO content. (Threshold refers to content per ingredient in each food item.)

  • Australia
  • Austria
  • Belarus
  • Belgium
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Bulgaria
  • Croatia
  • Cyprus
  • Czech Republic
  • Denmark
  • Estonia
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Iceland
  • Italy
  • Ireland
  • Kazakhstan
  • Latvia
  • Lithuania
  • Luxembourg
  • Malta
  • Netherlands
  • New Zealand
  • Norway
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Romania
  • Russia
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
  • Turkey
  • UK

These countries require mandatory labeling of many GMO foods and a labeling threshold higher than 1% or undefined. This includes laws with a threshold of 1% for the entire food item.

  • Brazil
  • China
  • Indonesia
  • Japan
  • Kenya
  • Malaysia
  • South Africa
  • South Korea
  • Sri Lanka
  • Ukraine

These countries require mandatory labeling of some GMO foods, but with numerous exceptions and no labeling threshold defined; or a vague mandatory GMO food labeling law that lacks implemention and enforcement provisions.

  • Bolivia
  • Cameroon
  • Ecuador
  • El Salvador
  • Ethiopia
  • India
  • Jordan
  • Mali
  • Mauritius
  • Peru
  • Senegal

Monsanto ordered to pay $93 million for poisoning local citizens with Agent Orange chemicals.

AgentOrange1

Earlier this month the State Supreme Court of West Virginia dealt a huge blow to the biotech company Monsanto, ordering it to pay $93 million to the small town of Nitro, West Virginia for poisoning local citizens with Agent Orange chemicals.

Approved last year, the details were only recently worked out a few weeks ago as to how the funds would be dispersed.

As mandated in the settlement:

  •     $9 million will be spent to clean dioxin contaminated dust from 4500 homes.
  •     $21 million will be spent to test to see if people have been poisoned with dioxin.
(Citizens will be monitored for such poisoning for 30 years, not just a few months.)
  •    An additional $63 million is to be allotted if additional tests for dioxin contamination testing is necessary.

Anyone who lived in the Nitro area between Jan. 1, 1948, and Sept. 3, 2010 will be tested for dioxin. Although they must show proof they lived in the area, they will be eligible for testing even if they no longer live in Nitro.  Former or present employees of Monsanto are not eligible for any of these benefits.

An office will be set up to organize testing for Nitro citizens. The registration of participants is to be overlooked by Charleston attorney Thomas Flaherty, who was appointed by the court.  Residents have a right to file individual suits against Monsanto if medical tests show they suffered physical harm due to dioxin exposure.

Such goes to show that little towns CAN deal big blows to giant corporations.

As reported by Natural Society, Monsanto was producing the toxic herbicide Agent Orange in Nitro, and dioxin is a chemical byproduct of the substance. Known to cause serious health conditions, residents were not too pleased when they received word they were in close proximity with the toxin.

The factory which produced Agent Orange was opened in the West Virginian town in 1948 and remained operational until 2004 – even after it was found to be fatal to millions when used in Vietnam and other Asian countries.

Said Arnold Schecter and Jon Constable, “There is no doubt that during and after the war, many Vietnamese absorbed this very toxic material [dioxin]. It is our belief from toxicological research and epidemiological studies from many countries that this dioxin probably resulted in significant health effects in Vietnam.

The politics of dioxin has been bitterly debated since the Vietnam War, but … we know that there is a health issue there and hopefully people will get their houses cleaned and the risk will come to an end and those exposed in the past will have the benefit of keeping an eye on their health.”

Attorney Stuart Calwell told The Charleston Gazette that “It’s been a real long haul.” Caldwell represented Nitro area residents in a class action suit that prompted the biotech giant, Monsanto, to make the settlement.

In order to receive the benefits outlined in the settlement, residents of Nitro still need to fill out a register. And due to the serious importance of this landmark case, residents in the area are urged to participate as fully as possible to set a precedent for other class action suits that farmers and consumers of GMO foods around the world might ignite against Monsanto in the future.

If enough people join together to raise awareness and support for efforts against Monsanto, inevitably the corporate giant will pay for its deeds.  (NOTE:  Their profits have dropped by the millions upon millions of dollars as the truth gets out.)

There will be more and more lawsuits against Monsanto so we can easily assume this is the reason they want to change their name and move their headquarters out of this country, and I’m quite sure not paying taxes at lower rates hasn’t discouraged them either.
