“Unplanned” Premiers at 800 Theaters on March 29

This movie, “Unplanned”, brings an eye-opening look inside the abortion industry from a woman who was once its most passionate advocate. After reading Abby Johnson’s best-selling book of the same title, Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman were moved to bring this inspiring true story to the big screen, giving voice to a woman who has been on both sides of the abortion conversation.  Stumbling blocks were put everywhere when making this movie, by Planned Parenthood and Hollywood, by turning down nine out of ten times  their attempt to license songs (which meant main songs had to be cut back because of major labels refusing them license), having to secretly film in Oklahoma because of the controversy surrounding the subject matter, and finding a Director who was willing to produce it. 

The director of the forthcoming movie “Unplanned” says the pro-life film was made “for such a time as this,” as several states are advancing radical abortion laws.

Last month, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) signed into law a bill legalizing abortion “at any time when necessary to protect a woman’s life or health.” Lawmakers in Virginia, Rhode Island and Vermont are promoting similar bills.

For actress, Ashley Bratcher, making the pro-life-themed film “Unplanned” was both a professional challenge and a personal risk …“  “I knew from the very beginning, they warned me, they said, ‘You’re probably gonna get blacklisted. This could end your career.’ I said, ‘I don’t care. It’s worth it,’”   “This movie is not about judgment and condemnation, it’s about mercy and forgiveness,” she said. 

The $6 million “Unplanned” was partially financed by Michael Lindell, the multimillionaire founder of My Pillow. Worth an estimated $300 million, Lindell is a born-again Christian and outspoken supporter of President Donald Trump.

It has been said that, “Unplanned” is the most important movie you’ll ever see on the most controversial issue of our time. No matter which side of the fence you’re on, no one will leave this film unmoved by Abby’s journey.

The “My Pillow” man, Mike Lindell (Inventor and CEO of My Pillow, Inc., founder of the Lindell Foundation and the Lindell Recovery Network) has given  one million dollars to help produce a new Pro-Life film, which will be at theaters in March.  In the film, Mike makes a cameo appearance as  running a bulldozer over a Planned Parenthood facility in order to build the Pro-Life Headquarters for 40 Days for Life. The movie has been kept secret until recently because of its opposition to Planned Parenthood.

The movie is based on the book written by Abby Johnson, an anti-abortion activist who previously worked at Planned Parenthood as a clinic director for eight years.   Abby resigned from her job after watching an abortion on an ultrasound in October 2009, and has been a strong activist for Pro-Life ever since.

The Unborn Have No Constitutional Rights

Try as hard as I may to understand – do babies have Constitutional Rights, or not?

Scott Peterson is currently on death row because he killed his pregnant wife, Laci, and their unborn child, Connor.  He was charged with two murders, not one, and this type of punishment happens in other cases and states too.

I understand that people can be punished for killing an unborn baby, but only if it is a crime that the mother doesn’t choose.  But for the life of me I can’t seem to wrap my head around the fact that the same crime is acceptable if the mother chooses to kill her own child, and a doctor participates, after he has taken an oath to protect life. How is the doctor any different than the criminal murderer?  Should a doctor lose their license by going against the oath that they took to protect life? Why do people who aid in a murder also held responsible, so how is the mother different than a criminal who aids in a murder?  (LET ME STRONGLY SAY THAT WE NEED TO HAVE EMPATHY AND COMPASSION FOR MOTHERS WHO FEEL THEY HAVE NO OTHER CHOICES BECAUSE THEY DO NOT HAVE THE SUPPORT OR EDUCATION TO LET THEM KNOW THERE ARE OTHER OPTIONS AND PEOPLE IN THE PRO-LIFE COMMUNITY THAT ARE HERE TO HELP THEM.)

In the Peterson case, baby Connor was given Constitutional Rights, but when it comes to abortion, the baby doesn’t have Constitutional Rights.  Aren’t Constitutional Rights suppose to cover ALL people?  According to the United States Declaration of Independence – “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are LIFE, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. ——”

On Wednesday, Sept 28th, Ann Arbor will join 366 other locations, across ALL 50 US states and 23 nations in the UNITED 40 Days for Life campaign, which runs until Sunday, November 6. This is the largest pro-life mobilization in American history… the UNITED 40Days For Life Campaign, includes a massive 50 state tour. Ann Arbor will host the Michigan statewide rally on Saturday, Oct 8th at 11 am at Planned Parenthood on Professional Dr.

Guadalupe Workers Continue Their Work

I received this from Guadalupe Workers this morning.  Please read it before deciding that you cannot help them.  I know it is lengthy but well worth the read; this is Christian mercy in action and works to lift families out of poverty rather than give them a handout.

Here is what Alicia Wong sent me:

I have decided that for this letter I would like to provide a rather matter-of-fact account of some of the ways in which Guadalupe Workers helps its mothers, or spends its money.  Some mothers whom we meet at the abortion clinic receive FIA cash assistance, which usually gives them between four and five hundred a month on which to live.  When we meet a mother in this circumstance, we will usually provide a two hundred dollar monthly supplement, paid directly to the landlord, for an initial period of three to six months.  After that initial period, we reconsider the mother’s circumstances, and whether or not she is now able to take on full responsibility for rent.

The most frequent request made to Guadalupe Workers is for help with housing.  Again, some mothers have no more than four to five hundred a month.  Working moms might bring in eight hundred to a thousand.  Moving into an apartment in Detroit will cost, with security deposit, around $1,400. This is cash the mothers simply do not have.  We find, then, that often they are “living around”—meaning that they will spend a week or two with one relative or friend, another week somewhere else, and so on, usually with two or three children in tow.  If they run out of places to stay, we might receive an emergency call—as we did yesterday, when we met a mother and her two children at a motel in Dearborn and paid $300 to have her settled at least for one week.

Occasionally a mother comes into a wad of cash, sometimes through a tax return, sometimes from inheritance.  She might use this in order to purchase what I call the Detroit special: a five or six thousand dollar house.  Then again, she might come into possession of such a house through a rent-to-own arrangement.  Regardless, as a family moves into one of these houses, normally the mother and children end up inhabiting a house that has no furnace, no hot water heater, no appliances, and outdated electrical service.  For the next few months, they have to live in a discreet manner, hoping that no one will report them to Child Protective Services.  Much of our income, then, is spent in purchasing major appliances, or in hiring someone to install major appliances. 

Other mothers have already expired the 4 year eligibility for FIA assistance.  They, frequently, have no income at all.  A mother with whom we have been working this past year was in that situation; we paid her entire rent for 6 months and provided GED tutoring, with the hope and expectation that she would, in that time period, find a job and pass the final test for her GED diploma.  We are right at the end of that 6 month period, so are waiting to see what happens!

DTE bills are often in arrears with our mothers.  These bills can range anywhere from two hundred to two thousand dollars.  The bills are high because, invariably, the houses are old, in poor repair, and the mothers know nothing about insulating drafty windows.  At the same time—and we don’t know why—most Detroit residents (at least the ones we have met) habitually keep their thermostats during the winter at about 76 degrees. 

Unpaid tickets are yet another problem.  Most frequently these tickets have to do with driving without insurance.  Very few people in Detroit, actually, have insurance.  They can’t afford it.  This is what happens: since a policy in Detroit would cost several thousand dollars, and, since a car can’t be registered without insurance, unprincipled companies sell two week insurance policies for around $300.  These policies last just long enough for the car to be registered—at which point the policy expires.  A few months later the driver gets pulled over for a burnt-out taillight or some such matter.  The officer asks for proof of insurance, finds that it is expired, writes another ticket.  The driver cannot pay these tickets, or other tickets that start to pile up….  It all concludes with a suspended license, but since for so many the car is badly needed, they continue to drive…more tickets, higher fines….  Usually we advise the mother to go to court and throw herself on the mercy of the judge, who sometimes will set up a payment plan.

 

We always tell our mothers not to get into survival mode—to think ahead, to plan ahead.  Consequently, we look for opportunities to help them with training or certification programs.  Also, when we find someone who actually has an unfettered driver’s license, we like to be able to provide a decent car, something that will take them to class or to work. 

What we do, then, is way beyond providing diapers and wipes (though we do that too).  Our expenditures are consistently heavy; but that is because when we meet a mother at the abortion clinic, we tell her that we will help with whatever she needs.  That is a promise that saves lives.  It is also a promise that we have never broken.  Accordingly, I ask that, in the busy-ness of summer and with the expenses of vacations, you will not forget us.  We are still there, still in the city, still doing what we have been doing the past 13 years.

Sidewalk Warriers Helping Women Outside Abortion Centers

“Maintain good conduct among the Gentiles, so that if they speak of you as evildoers, they may observe your good works and glorify God on the day of visitation.” 1 Pet 2:12 (NABRE)

People that pray or sidewalk counsel outside abortion centers are often maligned as evildoers – but not always. Sometime, they are affirmed. I’ll share two stories from this week.

“Memorial Service today (at Northland Abortion Center – Southfield, MI) showed a woman coming out walking slowly, holding her hand to her face to hide the tears – obviously in great pain, sadness and remorse. The boyfriend/husband had his arm around her walking her back to the customized white van. Obviously an abortion may and actually did take place – a horrible sight to see afterwards of the effect of and affects to – in so much misery.

After the ending (of the Memorial service) and walking back to (my vehicle),  another woman drove over to where we parked and stopped to talk.

She’s smart and spoke about they’re trying to exterminate the black, etc.  We told her
we are here to pray which she affirmed and expressed appreciation.  “They killed a baby”, she said when we told her about the woman in great sadness and pain.  She also spoke favorably about when we’re seen out front and the patrons see us and understand the mercy permeating from our souls of love.

A little report is better than no report.

Hopefully it’ll serve it’s purpose that the Memorial Service is doing what it is intended for – to spread love, prayers, forgiveness and mercy to those victims of the deceitfulness of abortion.”

That was from last Saturday’s 4:30 PM Memorial service:

“This past Wednesday, I joined Emmanuel at Summit Abortion Center. Summit affords marvelous counseling opportunities because the sidewalk is right by the door.
Call me cowardly, but I let Emmanuel do the sidewalk counseling and I pray or, more recently, sing hymns of praise.

After Dr. Sharpe arrived, we briefly talked about the discouragement that we sometimes experience outside these death pits. We have both seen a hardening of attitudes in the nine years that we’ve been on the sidewalks. The women usually do not respond to the help offered and their escorts often imitate Pontius Pilate, washing their hands of the innocent blood and blaming the mothers for coming there. We are often dismissed with a “God will forgive me”,  as if God is okay with people rejecting His gift of life and doesn’t care that people don’t love Him.

I was about to leave after singing “What Wondrous Love is this”, when the door opened and a woman emerged and told Emmanuel, “you touched my heart and I’m going to have this baby. I’m just waiting for my ride to arrive.”  She mentioned her concern that the abortion staff would give her a hard time, but they cheerfully refunded her money and told her she could come back if she changes her mind. Emmanuel gave her info about the local pregnancy resource centers, including ICU, and I could see the beginnings of a friendship.

So, “Whoever saves a life, it is considered as if he saved an entire world.” Mishnah Sanhedrin 4:5; Yerushalmi Talmud 4:9, Babylonian Talmud Sanhedrin 37a.  In the case of abortion, a baby’s life spared is a sign of hope to the community and an affirmation that God’s mercy exceeds His wrath.

But there is another part of that quote, which actually precedes it: “Whoever destroys a soul, it is considered as if he destroyed an entire world.”

Memorial Service is every Saturday at 4:30 pm on the public sidewalk outside Northland Family Planning, 24450 Evergreen Rd., Suite 220, Southfield, MI.  The Knights of Columbus pray there every Saturday at 8:30 am.
